Search Engines display the results of any keyword query in two different ways. One way they display them is whenever you type in a keyword or keyword phrase, each Search Engine uses they're own criteria to "rank" each website and then display them in order, from the ones they feel most represent your keyword to the least. Depending on the keyword, the number of websites that match it could be in the millions and since 80% of Internet Shoppers don't look past the first couple of pages of results, the challenge for internet marketing strategy is to correctly anticipate the current criteria each Search Engine uses. Moreover, since the criteria constantly changes continual attention is needed so that your websites' rank improves or "grows organically". Creating a "buzz" or interest in a product or service by using social networking websites that pass along the information in a self-replicating way is referred to as "viral marketing". Also, the major Search Engines use a websites’ popularity as a ranking criteria, so the internet marketing strategy should include linking your website to others on the internet and since these sites are also linked to others, gaining popularity through linking is "organic" in nature. So with "viral" marketing techniques that cause Search Engine ranking "growth", comes the concept of Organic Marketing.
The other way Search Engines display the results of any keyword query is the Pay-Per-Click (PPC) section. These results are listed both above and to the right of the organic section. They run in descending order and placement is determined by those websites that have an ad campaign with a Search Engine and then bid for the spot they want, the higher the bid the higher the listing. The bids can be from as little as 10 cents a click to $20.00+ a click depending on the competitiveness of the keyword being bid. The Search Engine then charges them their bid price every time someone “clicks” on their websites ad. Constantly monitoring the bids, effective quality control from detailed tracking, and protection from fraudulent clicks are just a few of the challenges that any successful PPC Campaign faces.
For some websites Pay-Per-Click Campaigns provide quick, verifiable results but as stated before, can be costly and time consuming if not managed professionally. While every click is free to your website within the organic section, getting your website ranked where it will be seen is a long term process beginning at its design and continuing through the life of the site. Organic campaigning is cost effective and sustainable but takes a long term commitment.

Links are one of the most popular ways for people to find new sites and so the more quality sites that link to you the better.
Social Marketing:
Creating a "buzz" or interest in a product or service by using social networking websites that pass along the information in a self-replicating way is referred to as "viral marketing". These social networking interfaces use a variety of techniques to reach a diverse audience that web marketers can exploit in order to increase interest in a product or service and thereby drive more qualified traffic to their clients websites. These include but are not limited to-
Blogs- A blog (a contraction of the term weblog) is a website, usually maintained by an individual or business with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video. Entries are commonly displayed in reverse-chronological order.
Newsgroups- A newsgroup is a repository usually within the Usenet system, for messages posted from many users in different locations.
